For customers who are interested in only a single subject area of reporting a data mart might be the appropriate offering. Here a multi-dimensional Database is designed and created to meet the specific reporting needs of one subject area.
As your business grows, and additional data marts are requested, however, it can become difficult to access data across several data marts because the underlying data linkages between subject areas were not created. The way to avoid this pitfall is to create a data warehouse and then design a series of data marts off of the single repository warehouse. Global IDs will contract to either create individual data marts OR a series of data marts built upon an underlying data warehouse.
