Data Profiling Overview

Companies that possess complex data environments often lack a detailed understanding of their data assets. Data profiling is a computational approach for automatically understanding the meaning associated with each data asset.

To profile any data attribute, the software inspects the contents of the data attribute and creates metrics describing each characteristic of the data. The cumulative set of metrics, collectively known as the ‘data profile’ provides a detailed and accurate description of how each attribute is being used, and its quality. If the profile is supplemented by descriptive text, it can become a good source of documentation and understanding of a company’s data assets.

The benefits of data profiling include -

  1. Automatically generate a library of documentation describing your companies data assets
  2. Reduce time for integration projects
  3. Increase the maturity of your company’s data management initiatives.
